In these final sequences of Part III of the Book of Acts, the second phase of Paul’s missionary journey continues through Macedonia before moving on to Greece where he spends a brief time in Athens before a more extended stay in Corinth. Despite the divine intervention in Philippi in the previous sequence, which focused attention on the evangelisation of the Gentiles, Paul fails to follow this up but reverts to his earlier practice of devoting his energy first and foremost to the Jews in the synagogues. In Athens, his wellknown attempt to speak to the Gentiles meets with little favour; it is only in Corinth, after fierce opposition from the synagogue, that Luke records more successful efforts to include the Gentiles as well as the Jews in his preaching activity.

The omission of the article ἡ after αὕτη by both B03 and D05 could
be due to haplography. On the other hand, it is superfluous, except in so
far as the phrase it introduces, ἡ ὑπὸ σοῦ λαλουμένη/καταγγελλομένη,
is considered to be in apposition to ἡ καινὴ αὕτη ... διδαχή.
The verb καταγγέλλω of which D05 reads the participle has the force
of ‘proclaim’, missing from the weaker verb λαλέω.

The prefix εἰϛ- of the compound verb in B03 anticipates the preposi-
tion before the noun τὰϛ ἀκοάϛ. With the neuter noun ῥήματα as the
direct object of the verb in D05, in addition to the neuter adjective
ξενίζοντα, the force of the prefix is unnecessary.

The neuter plural τίνα in B03 is the subject of the verb θέλει (B-D-R,
§299, n. 1), where the indicative expresses the potential sense (B-D-R,
§385, n. 1). In D05, the neuter singular τί corresponds to the predicate
(B-D-R, §299,1), and the optative (ἂν θέλοι) expresses the indirect rhe-
torical question (B-D-R, §385, n. 2); cf. τί ἂν θέλοι, 17:18 B03.

The prepositional phrase in D05 has the function of clearly distin-
guishing between the Athenians (the Epicureans) and the foreigners
among them (the Stoics).

The repetition of τι in B03 enhances the distinction between the two
activities: speaking (corresponding to the Epicureans) and listening (cor-
