Chrys C. Caragounis - Jan Van der Watt, «A Grammatical Analysis of John 1,1», Vol. 21 (2008) 91-138
This article is a pilot study on the feasibility of investigating the grammar, both in terms of words and sentences, of the Gospel according to John in a systematic manner. The reason is that in general the commentaries and even specialized articles have different foci, inter alia, focusing on the historical nature or the theological and literary aspects that the Gospel is so well-known for. In surveys of commentaries on the Gospel it becomes apparent that real grammatical studies are far and few between, and that there is a tendency among commentators to copy grammatical material from one another. More often than not, grammatical issues are simply ignored and the unsuspecting and trusting reader will not even realize that there is a dangerous dungeon of grammatical problems lurking beneath the surface of the text. Apart from that, the significance of grammatical decisions are often underestimated in studies of John’s Gospel.

precisely as English, German, French, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, Ita-
lian, etc. It is impossible to use the indefinite á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ in Demotic
Neohellenic. But a Greek understands both á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ and στὴν á¼€Ïχὴ(ν)
in this context as saying the same thing.
‣ Finally, á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ as such is indefinite. However, its close relation to a
noun27 or a verb28, of which noun or verb (action) it is the beginning,
lends to it a certain definiteness. Thus, the absolute á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ (in Jn
1,1), referring, as it does, to the state that existed before the beginning
of creation (Gen 1,1), can never be understood merely of “a beginningâ€
(as though there were many beginnings) but “of the beginningâ€. It may
be said that the phrase has almost crystallized into a set formula or
even that it has acquired a kind of adverbial force29.
2.2 The meaning of Ï€Ïὸς τὸν θεὸν
2.2.1 The status of the research on Ï€Ïὸς τὸν θεόν in John 1:1b.
Jan v.d. Watt: The translation of Ï€Ïὸς τὸν θεόν seems to be evident
and indisputable,30 although closer scrutiny points to considerable vague-
ness when a more accurate description of the meaning should be given.
Part of the vagueness lies in the wide variety of different meanings the
word Ï€Ïός (+ acc.) may be used for.31 The preposition Ï€Ïός is used with
E.g. LXX Judg 7,17 (B): á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ τῆς παÏεμβολῆς; Ruth 1,22: τοῦ θεÏισμοῦ; 4 Kgds

17,25: τῆς καθέδÏας; 2 Esdr 4,6: τῆς βασιλείας; Ps 136,6: τῆς εá½Ï†Ïοσύνης μου; Isa 51,9:
ἡμέÏας; Jer 33,1: βασιλέως; Ez 21,24: á½Î´Î¿á¿¦ πόλεως; Ez 42,10. πεÏιπάτου; Dan 9,23: τῆς
δεήσεως σου.
E.g. LXX a Chron 16,7: á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ τοῦ αἰνεῖν.

The expression á¼Î½ á¼€Ïχῇ functions as a temporal adverb, like á¼€Ïχήν, τὴν á¼€Ïχήν (see
29
C. C. Caragounis, “What Did Jesus Mean by τὴν á¼€Ïχήν?â€, NovT 49 (2007), 129-47, esp.
137-47). Other temporal adverbs include: á¼Î½ ἡμέÏá¾³, á¼Î½ νυκτί, á¼Î½ θέÏει, á¼Î½ τάχει, á¼Î½ βÏαχεῖ,
á¼Î½ ὀπώÏῃ, á¼Î½ χÏόνῳ, á¼Î½ πολέμῳ, á¼Î½ εἰÏήνη, etc. (see R. Kühner, Ausführliche Grammatik
der griechischen Sprache (Gr. tr.) Part II, Vol. 1, p. 319, 387,464 and E. Schwyzer, Grie-
chische Grammatik, Band II: Syntax und syntaktische Stilistik, München: C.H. Beck’sche
Verlagsbuchhandlung, 5 Aufl. 1988, 458.
Considering different translations, the following pattern emerges: Nearly all trans-

lations translate, “The Word was with Godâ€, for instance, ESV, 1890 Darby, ASV, CEV,
GNT, ISV, KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NLV, NCV, KJV, NKJV, RSV, NRSV, NAU, NJB, WEB,
DRA, TNT, MNT, Young’s, German Einheitsüberstetzung (bei), Luther 1984, Elberfelder,
Gute Nachricht (bei), Bibelen kanoniske Bøger (hos), Dutch 1951, Dutch Statenvertaling
(bij), Dutch GNB, Leidse vertaling (bij), Afrikaans Old and New Translation, Afrikaans
Living Translation, Die Boodskap. Except for paraphrases, there are basically no excep-
tions. BBE (1949/64) however translates, “the Word was in relation with Godâ€.
The following summary reflects the use of Ï€Ïός in the Gospel according to John:
